·687 words·4 mins

Odysseas Elytis and “Axion Esti” #

Odysseas Elytis (1911–1996) is one of the most prominent Greek poets and the second Greek author to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1979. His poetry is celebrated for its celebration of Aegean light, the sea, Greek heritage, and optimistic humanism.

The Masterpiece: “Axion Esti” #

His most celebrated work is the poetic cycle “Axion Esti” (Worthy It Is, published in 1959). The poem is structured into three parts (Genesis, The Passions, and Gloria) and seamlessly integrates Classical and Byzantine linguistic elements with modern poetic structure. It weaves together the history of Greece, the struggles of its people, and the eternal beauty of existence.

The Musical Setting by Mikis Theodorakis #

In 1964, renowned composer Mikis Theodorakis set “Axion Esti” to music. This landmark oratorio brought Elytis’s verse into popular consciousness across Greece. Songs like “Ena to Chelidoni” (A Solitary Swallow) and “Tis Dikaiosynis Ilie Noite” (O Sun of Justice, Intelligible Sun), performed by Grigoris Bithikotsis became enduring anthems of freedom and national unity.

“With the star’s lantern on my shoulders I roam
through my homelands as they ignite…”

Odysseas Elytis, from the poetic work “Axion Esti” (1959).

“O Sun of Justice, Intelligible Sun” #

O Sun of Justice, intelligible Sun
and myrtle twig of glory
do not, I beseech you, do not
forget my country

During the dictatorship of the colonels (1967–1974), the song was banned. Performing or listening to it was an act of resistance, establishing it as a timeless symbol of freedom, justice, and human dignity. The phrase “Intelligible Sun” originates from Platonic philosophy and Byzantine hymnology. It does not refer to the physical star in the sky, but to the supreme, spiritual light of truth, morality, and justice that illuminates the human soul.
