The Mastic Villages of Chios: The Villages of “White Gold” #
What are the Mastic Villages? #
In the southern part of Chios, a beautiful island in the Eastern Aegean, lies a cluster of 24 villages known as the Mastihochoria (Mastic Villages). These villages are unique in the world because only here does the mastic tree (lentisk) produce natural mastic resin.
Although the lentisk bush grows throughout the Mediterranean region, only in southern Chios does the tree “weep” and yield this valuable aromatic resin.
History and Village Architecture #
The Mastic Villages were built during the Middle Ages, when Chios was under Genoese rule. To protect the mastic trade from pirates, the Genoese designed the villages like fortresses:
- Narrow alleys: Houses were built tightly against one another, with no ground-floor windows facing outward.
- Central tower: A tall tower stood at the center of each village, serving as a refuge for residents during attacks.
- Pyrgi and Mesta: Pyrgi is famous for its “xysta” — black-and-white geometric patterns carved on house facades. Mesta is one of the best-preserved medieval castle villages in Greece.
“Mastic is not merely a product; it is the identity, history, and soul of southern Chios.”
